Under these aixousta 139s the firu's letter to ma
of the 18th instant is, I venture to sumit, a most up-
satisfactory explanation of their share in these pro-
oaeiings, and it confirms ne in my opinion that Messrs.
Butterfield & Yvirs's manager in Hongkong has on this
oggasion allowed himself to be drawn into a course of
action, unworthy of the great firm whose representativa
he is, by which he has sought to purchase impunity for
the firm's business transactions at the ecpease of tho
reputation of the british and Portuguess Consular authorities
ia Canton and the good name of offlowers in the tritish
merohsat service,
The sno losures above referred to are :
1. Copy of Messrs. Butterfiel1 & Tire's latter
to me datei June 15.
3.
Translation of the Chinese version of the letter
(with Chinese text) read out at the Self Roverament
Rocisty's uesting.
5. and 4. Copy of my letter to Messrs. Butterfield
& vire and of their reply.
I have the hogo' to ba,
